Buying a car from the US: what to check

Cars from US auctions are often cheap but carry risks: serious damage, flood history and rebuilt bodies.

Check the VIN history

Start with the decode and the auction lot history: look at lot photos before and after repair, damage notes and the odometer at sale. This data is part of the extended report for US VINs.

Damage status

Anything described as “salvage”, “flood” or “total loss” means significant damage. Such cars can be repaired, but the quality varies. Weigh the extent of the damage and the cost of repair, not only the price.

Inspect before buying

Check body geometry, paint thickness, chassis and suspension, signs of water and airbags. Test the electrics separately: after a flood they often fail later, not at once.

Import cost

Shipping, duty, excise and VAT are added to the price. Use the import-duty calculator for a rough estimate, and always confirm the final amount with a customs broker.

Check recalls

US cars may have recalls that were never officially carried out in Ukraine. Know about them in advance.
